Ace: A legal serve that does not touch the receiver's
racket.
Advantage: The first point scored after deuce to put one
player in the lead.
Back court: The area between the baseline and the service
line.
Baseline: The end boundary line on the court.
Break serve: To win a game that the opponent served.
Deuce: The term for a game score, which is tied at 40. A
player must win two consecutive points to win the game after deuce.
Double Fault: Two consecutive failed serves resulting in the
loss of a point.
Drop shot: A softly hit shot that just drops over the net.
Fault: A failed serve.
Forecourt: The area between the service line and net.
Kick serve: A serve with a heavy spin that usually bounces
away from the opponent.
Let: A serve that touches the net but lands in the
opponent's service box. The player then serves over.
Lob: A ball hit deep into the opponent's court, usually over
his or her head.
Love: The term for a score of zero.
Passing shot : A shot hit past an opponent.
Poach: A strategy in doubles in which the net player moves
towards the middle of the court to hit the ball.
Rally: The continuous exchange of shots between players,
beginning with a serve and ending when one player fails to successfully return
the ball.
Service box: The rectangular area (6.4 metres from the net
and 4.1m wide) in which a successful serve must land.
Slice: A shot in tennis that slows the speed of the ball and
makes it bounce lower.
Smash: An overhead shot with power.
Unforced error: A lost point caused by a player's mistake,
such as hitting the net, hitting the ball out of bounds or a double fault.
Volley: A shot made before the ball bounces.
Winner: A shot that is not returned by the opponent
resulting in a point.
